The Sheffield Shield is Australia’s premier first-class competition, contested by six state teams across the home summer. The 2026-27 season, the latest edition of a tournament first played in 1892-93, began on 7 October 2026 and runs through to the final in late March 2027.

South Australia start as back-to-back defending champions, chasing a third straight title. With ten rounds of four-day cricket feeding into a five-day final, every point matters from the opening round. This page carries the latest Sheffield Shield 2026-27 points table, updated as results come in.

Sheffield Shield Points Table Calculation

Sheffield Shield matches reward both outright results and strong first-innings performances. A team earns 6 points for an outright win, 3 points for a tie, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a loss. On top of that, sides collect bonus points in the first 100 overs of their first innings. Batting bonus points are worth 0.01 of a point for every run scored above 200, so a team that posts 350 in that window picks up 1.5 batting points.

Bowling bonus points are worth 0.1 of a point for every wicket taken in the first 100 overs of the opponent’s first innings, up to a maximum of 1 point for all ten. Teams can also have points deducted for slow over rates. When sides finish level on points, the quotient, worked out from batting average divided by bowling average, decides the higher placing.

Verdict: Sheffield Shield 2026-27 Points Table Are Updated As of 17 October

The Sheffield Shield 2026-27 points table is current to 17 October 2026, with the standings settled after the opening round. Defending champions South Australia lead the way, their innings win over Victoria bringing a healthy 8.39 points, ahead of Western Australia on 7. New South Wales sit third after a high-scoring draw with Tasmania, while Queensland and Victoria prop up the table after first-round defeats. With the bulk of the season still to play, there is plenty of time for the table to change, but South Australia have made the ideal start to their bid for a third straight title.
