Virat Kohli lit up the 1st ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram with an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls. The knock brought up his 55th ODI century, carried him past 15,000 ODI runs as only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar, and was his 10th ODI hundred against West Indies, making him the first player with 10 tons against two different teams. It also tied Tendulkar’s 60 List A centuries and his 42 international hundreds in India. More records are within reach in the 2nd ODI.
6 Records Virat Kohli Can Break Against WI in 2nd ODI
Kohli enters the 2nd ODI on the edge of several records, some his own to extend and others long held by Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. Here are six he can move past, with where he stands on each.

1. Scoring 13,000 Runs Batting at No. 3
Kohli is already the leading run-scorer at No. 3 in ODIs, having passed Ricky Ponting earlier in 2026. After his 139* he sits on about 12,959 runs at the position and needs 41 more to become the first batter to reach 13,000 ODI runs from No. 3. A steady start in the 2nd ODI would get him there.
| Rank | Player | Country | ODI Runs at No. 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Virat Kohli | India | 12,959* |
| 2 | Ricky Ponting | Australia | 12,662 |
| 3 | Kumar Sangakkara | Sri Lanka | 9,747 |
| 4 | Jacques Kallis | South Africa | 7,774 |
| 5 | Kane Williamson | New Zealand | 6,504 |
2. Most Runs Scored While Chasing in ODIs
Chasing is where Kohli built his legend. He holds the record for the 2nd most runs in successful ODI run chases, well clear of the field at an average above 65. His 139* came in another chase, taking his tally past 8,600. However, he is still behind Sachin Tendulkar in this list but he might surpass him in 2nd ODI if India chases again and he scores more than 83 runs.
| Rank | Player | Runs in Successful Chases | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sachin Tendulkar | 8,720 | 42.33 |
| 2 | Virat Kohli | 8,638 | 66.44 |
| 3 | RG Sharma | 6,700 | 50.75 |
3. Most Centuries Against West Indies Across Formats
Kohli’s 10th ODI hundred against West Indies was also his 13th international century against them across formats, drawing level with Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing mark of 13. One more in the 2nd ODI would give Kohli the outright record for the most international centuries against West Indies.
| Rank | Player | Centuries vs West Indies (all formats) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sunil Gavaskar | 13 |
| 2 | Virat Kohli | 13* |
| 3 | Jacques Kallis | 12 |
4. Most Centuries Against a Single Nation in ODIs
With his 10th ODI ton against West Indies, Kohli now has two sets of 10 hundreds against one nation, West Indies and Sri Lanka. No one else has reached double figures against even one opponent. An 11th against West Indies in the 2nd ODI would push the record further ahead.
| Rank | Player | Opponent | ODI Centuries |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Virat Kohli | Sri Lanka | 10 |
| 2 | Virat Kohli | West Indies | 10 |
| 3 | Sachin Tendulkar | Australia | 9 |
| 4 | Rohit Sharma | Australia | 9 |
| 5 | Virat Kohli | Australia | 8 |
5. Highest International Centuries at Home
Kohli’s hundred in Thiruvananthapuram was his 42nd international century in India, matching Tendulkar’s record for the most international hundreds in a single country. The 2nd ODI is also at home, so a century there would give Kohli sole ownership of the mark.
| Rank | Player | Country | International Centuries at Home |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sachin Tendulkar | India | 42 |
| 2 | Virat Kohli | India | 42* |
6. Most Centuries in List A Cricket
His 55th ODI hundred was also his 60th List A century, tying Tendulkar’s record for the most hundreds in the format. Another century in the 2nd ODI, which counts as a List A game, would take Kohli to 61 and clear of Tendulkar.
| Rank | Player | List A Centuries |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Virat Kohli | 60* |
| 2 | Sachin Tendulkar | 60 |
| 3 | Graham Gooch | 44 |
| 4 | Graeme Hick | 40 |
| 5 | Kumar Sangakkara | 39 |
Verdict: Virat Kohli May Surpass All Records of Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs
Kohli has spent the last few years rewriting the ODI record book, and the 1st ODI showed how many of Tendulkar’s marks are now within his reach. He has already passed Tendulkar’s 49 ODI hundreds, matched his 60 List A centuries and his 42 international tons in India, and become the fastest to 15,000 ODI runs. The one number still far ahead is Tendulkar’s 18,426 ODI runs. If Kohli keeps scoring at this rate, even that may not stay safe. For now, the 2nd ODI gives him the chance to turn several ties into records of his own.
